There are lots of earthquakes in Japan. Most of them are barely noticed, but some are. Only a few ever cause any damage.
On the 8th and 9th of May there were a series of quakes, including a few big ones, that were felt in Tokyo (by some people; Marty's house shook but he slept through the two biggest recent quakes).
If you are worried about earthquakes or would just like to be prepared, you can read Meguro City's emergency information (pdf). You'll notice that the conference venue, Tokyo Institute of Technology, is one of the city's open evacuation areas, so it is the best place to be if disaster strikes.
