There are lots of earthquakes in Japan. Most of them are barely noticed, but some are. Only a few ever cause any damage.
A few hours after this wiki page was created there was a huge quake that was felt in Tokyo, but the most serious problems it caused were some train delays and an interruption to a baseball game.
If you are worried about earthquakes or would just like to be prepared, you can read Meguro City's emergency information (pdf). You'll notice that the conference venue is one of the city's open evacuation areas, so it is the best place to be if disaster strikes.
You can get details of recent quakes from the Japan Meteorological Agency.
If you want to learn more about earthquakes when you are here, visit the Earthquake Learning Center.
